About the Item

Antique Handcolored Engraving of Giraffes, Quadruped III, c.1800 This original handcolored copperplate engraving features two giraffes (*Giraffa camelopardalis*), vividly illustrated to showcase their unique anatomy and distinctive patterned coats. The engraving is sourced from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a celebrated 12-volume encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, known for its educational and artistic contributions to natural history. The engraving includes: 1. A young giraffe, depicted with smaller ossicones and a shorter neck, emphasizing its juvenile proportions (Fig. 1). 2. An adult giraffe, illustrated with its iconic long neck, distinct ossicones, and intricate coat pattern (Fig. 2). This beautifully detailed engraving captures the elegance and majesty of the giraffe, making it a valuable addition to collections of natural history art, antique prints, or zoological illustrations. It also serves as a fascinating insight into early depictions of exotic wildlife. Condition Report: Good condition. General age-related toning, minor edge wear, no text on verso.
