Antique Handcolored Engraving of Lizards, Iguana, Chameleon, and Salamander, Amphibien IV, c.1800 Description: This original handcolored copperplate engraving features four species of reptiles and amphibians, showcasing their unique anatomies and natural postures. The plate is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s Bilderbuch für Kinder (Picture Book for Children), a 12-volume encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, celebrated for its artistic and educational contributions to natural history. The engraving includes: 1. A Green Iguana (Iguana iguana), prominently displayed with its ridged back and striped tail. 2. A Common Chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon), perched on a branch, demonstrating its distinctive curled tail and detailed features. 3. A Stripe-tailed Lizard, possibly representing a Whiptail or similar species, known for its agility and slender form. 4. A Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra), recognizable by its dark body and vibrant orange-yellow markings.
