About the Item

Antique Indian Decorative Art Print with Royal Textiles and Weaponry, 1887 This vibrant antique print offers a spectacular glimpse into the richly adorned ceremonial and decorative arts of India, as documented in the influential 1887 German design compendium *Der Ornamentenschatz* (The Treasury of Ornament), published by Julius Hoffmann in Stuttgart and compiled by the architectural historian H. Dolmetsch. Titled *Metallarbeiten, Stickerei, Weberei und Malerei* (Metalwork, Embroidery, Weaving, and Painting), this chromolithographic plate captures the luxurious fusion of artistry, symbolism, and craftsmanship found in royal Indian regalia. At the center of the composition is an exquisite array of ceremonial objects: a parasol, halberd, shield, fan, and other implements associated with royal processions or temple rituals. Each item is rendered in dazzling detail, richly ornamented with embroidery, gold thread, precious stones, and intricate repoussé metalwork. Surrounding the central vignette are smaller panels featuring ornamental textiles, floral embroidery patterns, brocades, and appliquéd cloths in bold, saturated tones of scarlet, gold, emerald, and cobalt. Peacocks, floral vines, elephants, and symbolic motifs such as the tree of life are woven or painted into these fabrics, reflecting the deep cultural roots of Indian decorative traditions and their connection to mythology, ritual, and social status. This print not only records the visual splendor of these objects but serves as an artistic interpretation of Indian design at its most lavish and symbolic. Chromolithography was chosen for this series to faithfully reproduce the brilliance of traditional materials such as silk, gold thread, and jewel-toned dyes. The result is a print that remains visually striking, historically valuable, and stylistically inspiring for collectors and designers alike. Condition: This print is in good antique condition. The colors are vibrant and richly layered, with minimal signs of age. There is some light, even toning to the margins and minor foxing, typical of prints from this era. The back is blank, and the paper remains firm and clean. Framing Tips: A wide ivory or cream-colored mat will allow the dense detailing to breathe, while a gilded or black lacquer frame will enhance the luxurious palette. This print works beautifully as a standalone showpiece or as part of a larger collection of Indian or global decorative arts. It is particularly well-suited to eclectic, bohemian, or classically styled interiors that appreciate heritage, texture, and craftsmanship.
