About the Item

Antique Japanese Buddhist Deity Print with Guardians, 19th Century This captivating 19th-century Japanese print presents a vibrant depiction of a Buddhist deity surrounded by fierce guardian figures, illustrating the protective and compassionate aspects of Buddhist iconography. The main deity, haloed in soft radiance and depicted in serene composure, stands above two dynamic guardians in vivid blue and red flames—symbols of strength and protection. This central figure, likely representing Kannon (Avalokiteshvara), embodies compassion, while the guardians stand ready to ward off evil. The composition is rich in color and detail, from the flowing robes and delicate hand gestures of the central deity to the swirling waves beneath the guardian figures. Golden and turquoise accents highlight the lavish textile borders framing the scene, reminiscent of the refined textiles used to encase Buddhist scrolls and temple banners. Published by Sampson Low & Co. and lithographed by G. A. Audsley, this work was produced with the assistance of Imp. Lemercier & Cie in Paris. This reflects the 19th-century fascination with Japanese art in Europe, as collectors sought to acquire works that embodied both spiritual significance and intricate artistry. The inclusion of delicate calligraphy alongside the figures reinforces the print’s cultural authenticity and provides a meditative quality to the entire composition. For collectors of Japanese art, Buddhist iconography, or anyone fascinated by the cross-cultural exchanges of the 19th century, this piece offers both visual delight and spiritual symbolism. It speaks to the enduring power of Japanese religious art to inspire awe and tranquility. Condition Report: The print is in very good condition, with bright colors and crisp details throughout. Minor foxing along the margins typical of its age but does not detract from the vibrancy and clarity of the image. Framing Tips: Frame this print in a deep wooden or lacquered frame to complement the rich colors and preserve its luminous presence. A neutral mat in off-white or light cream will draw attention to the vibrant detailing and spiritual power of the central image.
