Title:
Antique Lithograph of Large Green Pigeon by Keulemans, Sumatra c.1887
Description:
This beautiful antique lithograph depicts the Large Green Pigeon (Treron nasica Schleg.) from the zoological exploration of Midden-Sumatra (Central Sumatra) in the late 19th century. The plate is titled Midden-Sumatra IV.1 Aves Pl. IV. and was drawn and lithographed by J.G. Keulemans, one of the most renowned bird illustrators of the 19th century, and printed by P.W\.M. Trap.
The illustration shows the pigeon perched calmly on a branch with large tropical leaves, displaying its vibrant emerald-green plumage, pale grey crown, pink eye-ring, and yellowish bill with delicate accuracy. Keulemans’ expert draftsmanship and subtle hand coloring bring out the refined textures of the feathers, making this an outstanding example of ornithological illustration. The species was described by Hermann Schlegel, a leading Dutch zoologist and curator at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden.
These lithographs formed part of the Dutch colonial natural history documentation of Indonesia’s rich biodiversity, valued for both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. Today they are highly collectible among connoisseurs of Southeast Asian natural history, antique bird prints, and works by Keulemans.
Condition report:
The print is in very good condition with bright original coloring. Minor age toning and a small crease to the right margin are present, not affecting the image. The paper remains stable with no tears or repairs.
