About the Item

Antique Lithographs of Termite Queen Cells – Termes Gibus, Sumatra c.1880 This pair of antique lithographs depicts the queen cells of the termite species 'Termes gibus' from the zoological exploration of Midden-Sumatra (Central Sumatra) in the late 19th century. The plates are titled 'Midden-Sumatra IV.5 Neur. Pl.VIII' and 'Midden-Sumatra IV.6 Neur. Pl.VII' and were drawn by M.F.W\.A. and A.J.W., lithographed with printing by P.W\.M. Trap. The illustrations show detailed studies of the intricate queen chambers created by 'Termes gibus', with their sculptural natural architecture rendered in careful tonal shading. These prints were part of the Dutch colonial scientific documentation projects, illustrating termite morphology and nest structures to aid taxonomic and ecological studies. The queen cells are depicted from multiple angles to highlight their construction and texture. Such plates remain highly collectible for their unique blend of natural history illustration, entomological documentation, and decorative organic forms, making them ideal additions to insect, tropical ecology, or architectural nature-themed collections. Condition report: Both prints are in very good condition with strong impressions and clean margins. Minor age toning and occasional faint spots typical of age are present, not affecting the illustrations. The paper remains stable with no tears or repairs. Framing tips: These prints will display beautifully in matching slim black or dark wood frames with a gold inner edge to emphasise their fine linework and earthy tones. Pair with cream or pale beige mats for an elegant, natural presentation ideal for libraries, studies, or natural history-themed interiors.
