About the Item

Antique Portrait François de Valois – Duke of Anjou and Brabant, 17th Century This elegant 17th-century engraved portrait depicts François de Valois (1555–1584), Duke of Anjou, Brabant, and Lothier, and Count of Flanders. Also known as François, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, he was the youngest son of King Henry II of France and Catherine de’ Medici, and brother to King Henry III. The Dutch inscription beneath the portrait reads: “Francois van Valois, Hartogh van Anjou, Brabant en Lotryk, Graef van Vlaenderen etc.” François played a complex political role during the turbulent late 16th century. He was involved in the Wars of Religion in France and briefly held aspirations to rule over the Netherlands during their revolt against Spanish rule. Backed by William of Orange, he was offered sovereignty over the Low Countries by the States-General in 1581, becoming titular Duke of Brabant and Count of Flanders. His reign was short-lived and marred by the failed “French Fury” coup in Antwerp (1583), after which his political fortunes rapidly declined. This portrait likely dates from shortly after his death and presents him in noble attire, including an elaborately pleated ruff and fur-trimmed robe. The engraved oval frame and pedestal-style cartouche are typical of formal commemorative prints of the era, designed to celebrate royal lineage and political influence. The engraving is finely executed, with delicate attention to facial features and fabric textures, conveying both dignity and idealized elegance. François’s expression is composed and direct, projecting the poise of a royal figure despite his troubled legacy. A compelling piece for collectors interested in French royal history, the Dutch Revolt, or 17th-century portraiture. Condition: Excellent impression with minor age-toning. Left edge cut short. Slight wear to corners, faint foxing in the upper margin. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: Pair with a gold, walnut, or black frame with a warm-toned mat to enhance the classic composition and historical character. Technique: Engraving Maker: Anonymous, Netherlands or France, 17th century
