About the Item

Antique Print of Fréminville’s Reef Fish – Hand-Colored French Lithograph, 1846 This rare and beautifully hand-colored lithograph features an unidentified tropical fish labeled Doidodxon Fremminvillii, a name that appears to be obsolete or provisional, likely never formally adopted into modern taxonomy. The print was published in Paris in 1846 as part of the Voyage de la frégate La Vénus, a major French naval and scientific expedition that took place from 1836 to 1839. Although the species name Doidodxon Fremminvillii no longer appears in contemporary ichthyological records, the fish is depicted with great anatomical precision. Its form suggests it may have belonged to the sea chub family (Kyphosidae) or a related tropical reef species, noted for its deep-bodied profile, strong fin structure, and evenly scaled surface. The fish is illustrated with rich, green-gray coloring and detailed scale patterns, highlighted by clear, lifelike shading. The head is expressive and slightly tilted forward, with an open mouth that adds movement and realism to the pose. The fins are broad and muscular, contributing to the sense of strength and balance in the composition. Two inset anatomical drawings are featured below the main image: * A close-up of the jaw and mouth structure, labeled A, * A pair of pharyngeal bones or inner jaw plates, labeled B and C. This is plate “Poissons Pl. 14” from the zoological section of the expedition. It was drawn by Werner and engraved by Barrois, and printed by Bougeard under the direction of the publisher Gide. The expedition’s prints were intended both for scientific study and as works of visual documentation, showcasing the artistic and zoological excellence of mid-19th-century France. The *Voyage de la Vénus* contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and their biodiversity. Today, prints from this expedition are highly collectible for their historical importance and decorative value. Condition: Very good condition. Minor foxing visible in the outer margins, not affecting the image. Strong plate impression and crisp coloring. No tears, repairs, or restoration. Framing Tips: This plate would display beautifully in a black, natural wood, or olive-toned frame with a soft white or ivory mat. It pairs well with both decorative interiors and scientific-themed spaces, especially when grouped with other natural history prints. Use museum-grade glass or UV-protective acrylic to preserve the integrity of the original hand coloring.
