About the Item

Antique Print – Hungarian Hussars on Horseback, Military Uniforms – 1858 This striking antique lithograph, dated 1858, presents two Hungarian Hussars on horseback in full regimental dress. The Hussars, renowned light cavalry of the Austro-Hungarian army, are shown in motion against a lightly painted landscape. The officer at the front rides a spirited dark horse, wearing a richly detailed uniform with frogged jacket, tall shako with plume, and red-lined cloak draped across the shoulder. His sabre hangs at his side, while the saddle cloth is decorated with the Hungarian arms, edged with gold trim. Behind him, another Hussar rides upright in his own formal cavalry attire, also equipped with sabre and shako. The Hussars were among the most celebrated cavalry troops of nineteenth-century Europe, famous for their bravery, distinctive uniforms, and elaborate style. Their origins trace back to fifteenth-century Hungary, but by the mid-1800s they had become an integral part of the Austrian imperial forces, serving across Europe. This print captures both the martial spirit and elegance of the Hussars, balancing historical authenticity with decorative color work. The lithograph was published in Vienna, as indicated by the imprint “K. K. Hof- u. Staatsdruckerei” (Imperial and State Printing Office). It forms part of a larger series on military uniforms, intended to document and glorify the diverse regiments of the Austrian Empire during a period of military pride and reform. Condition summary: Good impression with rich original hand coloring. Paper clean and stable with only minor toning at the edges and a few faint handling marks. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: This print is highly decorative and ideal for military or equestrian collections. A gilt frame will highlight the vivid colors of the uniforms and saddle cloths, while a dark wood frame paired with a cream or ivory mount will provide a balanced, scholarly presentation. Technique: Lithograph with original hand coloring Maker: Published by the Imperial and State Printing Office, Vienna, 1858

N.E. View of the United States Capitol, Washington, DC Antique Proof Print 1858
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This engraved print shows a view of the United States Capitol Building, in Washington, D.C. The print depicts the neoclassical building from the northeast orientation, with a bustling street scene in front. The steel engraving is a proof printing, drawn and engraved by Henry Sartain and published in 1858. Plans began in May 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce...
