Antique Print of Marriage Ceremonies in Amsterdam 'The Netherlands' by B. Picart

About the Item

Two distinct scenes depicted on a single plate. The first scene portrays a couple, depicted as fiancees, on their way to a church to be married. They are accompanied by a horse-drawn carriage and dogs, which suggests a sense of festivity and perhaps social status. This image captures the anticipation and excitement surrounding the impending marriage ceremony. The second scene illustrates a marriage ceremony taking place in the Reformed Church in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This scene provides a glimpse into the actual ritual and proceedings of a wedding within this particular religious and cultural context. It depicts the exchange of vows, the presence of clergy or officiants, and possibly other attendees witnessing the union. These images are part of a larger work titled 'Naaukeurige beschryving der godtsdienst-plichten, kerk-zeden en gewoontens van alle volkeren der waereldt' ('Accurate Description of the Religious Duties, Church Customs, and Habits of All Peoples of the World'), authored by A. Moubach and published between 1727 and 1738. This work provided a comprehensive exploration of religious practices and customs from various cultures worldwide. The plates in this work, including this one, were adapted by B. Picart and others from a variety of sources, including the works of de Bry. The French edition of the book, titled 'Ceremonies et coutumes Religieuses...' ('Religious Ceremonies and Customs...'), was published between 1721 and 1725. An English edition, titled 'Ceremonies and Religious Rites of the Various Nations of the Known World...', followed in 1733. These editions collectively constituted one of the most detailed and elaborate accounts of world religions and their rituals available at the time of publication.
