Untitled print, Section VII, plate X. This chromolithograph depicts a large portion of a sara, or large saucer-shaped dish of late period cloisonné enamel. Detailed information about this print is available on request. This print originates from the second volume of 'The ornamental arts of Japan' by G. Audsley. The exquisite plates were published by Sampson, Low & Co., and printed by Lemercier & cie., Paris. This grand work has been hailed as the most beautiful art book of the late 19th century. It contains text and plates in nine sections on painting, embroidery, textiles, lacquer, incrusted work, metal-work, cloisonné enamel, modeling and carving, and heraldry. With extensive notes on unpaginated leaves opposite each plate.

Japanese Woodblock Gakutei (1786-1868) by Harunobu Sugawara, original and unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868) Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer.
