About the Item
Antique Print of Sumatran Spiders – Orb Weavers & Jumping Spiders, c.1887
This fascinating antique print depicts a selection of striking spider species from Sumatra, illustrated around 1878 for the renowned scientific work Midden-Sumatra. The plate is titled *Epeiroidae, Theridioidae, Epeiroidae*, indicating orb-weaver spiders, cobweb spiders, and additional orb-weavers. It includes six detailed specimens rendered with exceptional precision by the natural history illustrator Ed. van Ravesteijn (Ed.Rv.), lithographed by A.J.W. and printed by P.W\.M. Trap in Leiden.
Species shown include:
1. A spiny orb-weaver (Gasteracantha species) with its characteristic wide, spiked yellow and red abdomen. These spiders build horizontal orb webs in forests and gardens.
2. A jumping spider (Salticidae family) with strong front legs and excellent vision, active hunters often found on vegetation.
3. Possibly a small orb-weaver or crab spider mimic, featuring bright orange and black coloration for mimicry or warning.
4. A cobweb spider (Theridiidae family) with slender legs and a bulbous abdomen, builder of tangled webs in forest undergrowth and near human dwellings.
5. An orb-weaver spider (Araneidae family) with a rounded patterned abdomen, typical of web builders across tropical Asia.
6. Possibly a velvet spider (Eresidae family), robust with reddish cephalothorax and patterned black abdomen, known for maternal care among some species.
This print originates from the comprehensive natural history series documenting the flora and fauna of central Sumatra, published in the late 19th century as part of Dutch colonial scientific explorations. Its precise scientific illustration style combined with elegant color lithography makes it a unique collectible for natural history enthusiasts, entomologists, and interior decorators alike.
