About the Item

Title: Acts V Engraving – Apostles Freed from Prison by Angel c.1735 Description: This dramatic antique engraving titled “The Acts Chap. V – The apostles delivered out of prison by the angel” depicts the miraculous liberation of the apostles as described in Acts 5:19. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving portrays an angel with radiant light emanating from behind, opening the heavy prison doors to lead the apostles to freedom. In the foreground, the angel gestures forward with authority and grace, their wings spread wide, while an apostle, likely Peter, looks on in awe as he steps forward from the dark cell. Behind them, a Roman soldier stands guard, unaware of the miracle occurring before him, illustrating the divine intervention surpassing earthly powers. The heavy stone arch, chains, and barred windows create a powerful contrast between captivity and miraculous liberation. This engraving is finely executed using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its precise line work and delicate shading that creates depth and atmosphere. While unsigned, it aligns stylistically with engravings produced after designs by artists such as Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for English folio Bibles of the early 18th century. Prints like this served not only as illustrations but as visual sermons, reinforcing theological teachings and biblical history within family devotion. Collectors value these engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into Protestant theological education and visual culture in the 18th century. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and some minor foxing mainly in the margins. The plate impression is strong, and engraved details are crisp and well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age, with no major tears or losses. Framing tips: Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the engraving’s fine lines and prevent fading. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of biblical scenes, enhancing any collection with its narrative power and historical depth.
