About the Item
Arabian Ornament Print – Antique Lithograph of Islamic Geometric and Floral Medallions, c.1869
This brilliant chromolithograph showcases a stunning selection of Arabian ornamental medallions, blending floral motifs with geometric precision and intricate calligraphy. Plate XXVII from L'Ornement Polychrome, it captures the mathematical beauty and spiritual elegance of Islamic design as seen in manuscript illumination, ceramic tiles, and architectural decoration across the Islamic world.
The composition features an array of circular and polygonal motifs, densely arranged against a soft terracotta ground. The central medallion draws the eye with its layered symmetry and complex interlacing of floral arabesques in sapphire blue, emerald green, crimson, and gold. Surrounding it are additional medallions—each a study in radial balance—showcasing star patterns, scrolling foliage, and stylized floral knots. Some of the designs incorporate calligraphic inscriptions in ornate Kufic and Thuluth scripts, suggesting Qur'anic or poetic text, often used in religious architecture and books.
The overall visual rhythm is both harmonious and dynamic, echoing the principles of unity and infinity central to Islamic aesthetics. The precision of the repeating patterns and their balance of positive and negative space reflect the intellectual and spiritual ideals of Islamic art, where abstract beauty is used to convey divine order.
Produced in Paris around 1869 by Firmin-Didot and lithographed by Durin, this plate is part of Racinet’s influential design compendium. It was printed using the chromolithographic process, which allowed for vibrant, layered coloration and minute detailing—a perfect match for reproducing the complexity of Islamic ornamentation.
This print served as a key design source for 19th-century architects and designers during the Orientalist revival. Its visual language influenced a wide range of decorative arts, from ceramics and stained glass to textiles and wallpaper.
