Armored Emperor Maximilian on Horseback in Ornate Renaissance Parade Dress. 1845

About the Item

Armored Emperor Maximilian on Horseback in Ornate Renaissance Parade Dress This richly detailed hand-colored print, numbered MCCCC No.74, depicts Emperor Maximilian I in full ceremonial armor, mounted on a splendidly caparisoned horse. It is a visually arresting representation of imperial power, chivalric tradition, and late Renaissance court culture, combining military symbolism with pageantry. The print presents a dynamic moment: the emperor riding forward confidently, dressed in a polished suit of armor and wearing a helmet crowned with a flamboyant blue and gold plume. The armor is intricately rendered, showing rivets, articulation, and heraldic detailing, all emphasizing both the grandeur and functionality of his martial status. Maximilian’s horse is equally resplendent, adorned with a richly embroidered cloth featuring large stylized pink and blue feathers and twin coats of arms — one bearing the imperial eagle and the other a shield with gold crown and Latin motto. The bridle and saddle are richly ornamented with gold detailing and tasseled fringe, highlighting the elevated role of horses in Renaissance statecraft and ceremony. The movement of the horse is elegant and deliberate, reflecting the classical equestrian tradition revived during the time. This print offers far more than a depiction of military dress; it serves as a cultural document, illustrating the theatrical display of imperial authority and Renaissance ideals of leadership. It is particularly appealing to collectors interested in historical costume, heraldry, or equestrian portraiture. The image evokes the famous processional scenes of the Holy Roman Empire and the highly choreographed court pageants of the 16th century. Condition: Very good antique condition. Minor age-related spotting visible primarily in the lower margin. Colors remain vivid, particularly in the reds, golds, and blues. The paper is clean and stable, with no tears or creases, and the plate impression is clear and intact. Framing Tips: This print will stand out beautifully when float-mounted to reveal its full border and plate mark. Use a wide mat in off-white or parchment tones to echo the background, and consider a rich walnut or dark gold frame to complement the warm hues in the print. Museum-grade UV-filtering glass is recommended to preserve the brightness of the hand-coloring. For a striking effect, this piece can be displayed alongside other equestrian or ceremonial costume prints in a gallery wall arrangement.
