About the Item

Title: Artifacts of New Holland and New Zealand: Tools, Ornaments, and Cultural Items Description: This lithograph, circa 1836, presents a detailed array of cultural artifacts from New Holland (modern-day Australia) and New Zealand, as documented during Dumont d'Urville's Astrolabe expedition. The top section features tools and adornments from New Holland, including a ceremonial club, necklaces made of shells, and spears used for hunting and combat. The lower section showcases the craftsmanship of the Maori people of New Zealand, displaying intricately carved hooks, paddles, and weapons. Among these is the iconic hei-tiki pendant, carved with elaborate designs, and fishhooks made from bone and shell, highlighting the Maori’s resourcefulness and connection to the sea. Each item reflects the artistry and utility of these indigenous cultures, offering insights into their daily lives, rituals, and traditions. This lithograph, drawn by Louis Auguste de Sainson and reproduced in Brodtmann’s Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe, serves as a significant ethnographic record of 19th-century indigenous material culture. Condition Report: Foxing is visible across the margins, with toning due to age and handling. The images are clean and well-detailed, retaining excellent contrast. A horizontal tear in the middle has been repaired with tape on the reverse. Overall, the piece is in fair condition.
