About the Item

Austrian Artillery Soldier, 1835–1848 – Hand-Coloured Lithograph This striking hand-coloured lithograph, drawn by Franz Gerasch and published in Vienna by L.T. Neumann, depicts an Austrian artilleryman from the period 1835–1848. The soldier stands in profile, wearing the distinctive artillery uniform of the era: a tall black shako with plume and yellow cockade, a dark red tunic with standing collar, blue trousers with a bold red stripe, and black boots. He carries a short sword and powder pouch, and a knapsack is strapped to his back. His stance, with musket slung and head turned slightly forward, conveys readiness and discipline. The background hints at a military engineering or siege setting, with bundles of fascines (bundled sticks used for fortification works) and earthen fortifications visible. This detail underlines the artillery’s dual role during the 19th century—not only in operating cannons but also in constructing and maintaining battlefield defences. The period from 1835 to 1848 was one of significant transformation in the Austrian Imperial Army. Artillery units were considered an elite branch, requiring both technical skill and physical endurance. The depicted uniform reflects the transition from Napoleonic influences to a more standardised Austrian style, retaining bright colours that projected military prestige and visibility on the battlefield. Lithographs such as this were intended both as military reference material and as decorative, patriotic works. The fine detailing of the uniform, combined with the rich hand-colouring, makes this print an important visual record of Austrian artillery history. Condition report: Excellent colour retention with some mild toning in the margins. Very minor handling marks, not affecting the printed area. Framing tips: A black or dark mahogany frame with a warm ivory or pale cream mount will enhance the vibrant reds and blues while preserving the historic feel. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: Franz Gerasch (artist), published by L.T. Neumann, Vienna, 1835–1848
