About the Item

Austrian Common Soldier and Grenadier of Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment, 1836–1848 – Hand-Coloured Lithograph This hand-coloured lithograph, produced between 1836 and 1848, depicts two members of the famed Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment of the Austrian Imperial Army. On the left stands a grenadier, identifiable by his tall fur cap with plume and brass front plate, a symbol of elite infantry status. On the right is a common infantryman (Gemeiner), wearing a shorter shako adorned with regimental insignia and a plume. Both wear white tunics with blue facings, blue trousers with a side stripe, and carry muskets with fixed bayonets, along with full marching kit including knapsacks, cartridge boxes, and rolled greatcoats. The Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment, officially k.u.k. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 4, had a distinguished reputation dating back to its founding in the late 17th century. This print captures the regiment’s appearance during the turbulent years leading up to and including the Revolutions of 1848, a period marked by political unrest and military modernization in the Austrian Empire. The grenadiers, often chosen for their height and discipline, served as shock troops, while the common infantryman formed the backbone of the regiment’s line. Printed by the k.k. Militär-Geographisches Institut, the lithograph combines precise uniform detail with vibrant hand-colouring, preserving the authentic colours of the regiment. This image serves as both an artistic and historical record of mid-19th-century Austrian military attire. Condition report: Strong, well-preserved colours with slight toning and minor foxing in the margins, including a faint stain below the caption, not affecting the main image. Framing tips: A dark walnut or black frame with a cream or light beige mount will highlight the blue and white uniforms while complementing the warm tones of the paper. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: W. Tiemann, published by k.k. Militär-Geographisches Institut, Vienna, 1836–1848
