About the Item

Axel Family in Traditional Costume, Zeeland-Flanders, 1930s Lithograph This delightful 1930s lithograph captures a joyful family scene from Axel, a town in Zeeland-Flanders, showcasing the distinctive regional dress of the late 19th to early 20th century. Depicted are a man, a woman, and two children engaging with a cart loaded with lush green hay, all dressed in richly colored traditional garments specific to the Axel district. The man, seated contentedly, wears an elegant black broadcloth suit with velvet trim and two rows of silver buttons, paired with a patterned floral waistcoat fastened by ornate silver buttons. His peaked cloth cap and red silk neckerchief complete the attire once common before World War I. The woman, shown in everyday wear rather than festival costume, wears a black short-sleeved bodice with pale yellow spots and blue braiding. Her blue petticoats, visible beneath a coarse blue cotton apron, are tightly pleated for volume. Her shoulder pieces are made of green satin with a multicolored floral pattern, and her head is adorned with the typical white cotton cap of Axel, secured with gold pins, *beugel*, and curled *krullen*. Blue knitted stockings and black mules finish the look. The two children delight viewers with their miniature versions of adult attire. The older child climbing the hay mound wears a black frock with deep horizontal pleats and a blue pinafore, echoing the mother’s working dress. The infant girl atop the hay wears a child’s cap of dark blue sateen with bead trim, gold jewelry, and a striking winged *doek* in brown satin with blue and yellow floral designs. Her ensemble is completed with a bodice of black cloth and a green silk apron fastened with cherry-red ribbons. This richly detailed print not only captures the lively charm of Axel family life but also preserves the intricacies of a now-vanished costume tradition rooted in identity, craftsmanship, and regional pride. Condition: Very good. The colors remain strong and vibrant. There is only light age toning at the edges and a tiny corner bump, but no tears, stains, or distracting marks. Clean verso. An excellent example for display. Framing Tips: We recommend a dark wood or black lacquer frame to anchor the composition and highlight the deep tones in the clothing. A double mat—cream outer with a deep plum or blue inner—will echo the hues of the garments and elevate the visual impact. Consider museum-grade glass for UV protection if displayed in a well-lit area.
