About the Item

Allegory of Fire with Charon on the River Styx – 18th Century Optical Print This dramatic and richly colored 18th-century optical print presents an allegorical vision of 'Fire', rendered with theatrical intensity and mythological symbolism. Engraved by Tobias Lobeck and based on a design by the famed Viennese court scenographer Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini (1636–1707), this hand-colored print was intended for use with a zograscope or optical viewer, which enhanced its illusion of depth and motion. The scene is set within a monstrous red cavern, which forms a grotesque open mouth complete with blazing yellow eyes and fiery whiskers. Inside the fiery jaws, smoke-breathing demons hurl themselves into the sky as a city burns in the background. The flames erupt upward, turning the entire sky into a vivid sea of destruction. In the foreground, a lone figure—Charon, the mythological ferryman of the underworld—rows his boat across the River Styx, ferrying souls toward damnation. The composition is both apocalyptic and allegorical, intended to represent the elemental force of fire as both destruction and judgment. Below the image, the allegory is titled in four languages—German (Das Feuer), Latin (Ignis), French (Le Feu), and Italian (Il Fuoco)—with accompanying verses describing “the demons of hell and Charon on the River Styx,” referencing classical and Christian notions of hellfire. The engraving was published in Augsburg with the Imperial privilege (Cum Gratia et Privilegio Sac. Caes. Majestatis) by the Imperial Franciscan Academy, a major producer of optical prints in the 1700s. This print belongs to a rare series representing the four elements—Air, Fire, Water, and Earth—executed in a flamboyant baroque style blending allegory, stagecraft, and early scientific curiosity. Burnacini’s theatricality is palpable in every detail: from the swirling smoke to the monstrous head enclosing the scene like a living proscenium arch. Condition summary: Bright original hand-coloring with some age-related edge wear and toning mostly around the borders. Center crease from original binding visible but stable. A dramatic and well-preserved example of allegorical printmaking. Framing tips: Use a dark wood or crimson-toned frame to echo the fiery tones. A charcoal or ivory mat enhances the visual contrast. Museum glass is recommended to preserve color and detail while minimizing reflection. Perfect for bold interiors.
