About the Item
Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Apostles Bartholomew & James, and John the Baptist (1735)
This compelling set of three antique engravings, printed in 1735, presents key figures and moments from the New Testament. The images include two apostles—St. Bartholomew and St. James the Greater—and the dramatic aftermath of the beheading of John the Baptist. All three were executed in copper engraving, offering refined detail and strong visual impact, and are ideally suited for collectors of religious prints or thematic presentation in a devotional or academic setting.
The first engraving, from Matthew Chapter X, verse 3, shows “St. Bartholomew the Apostle” standing barefoot on a classical pedestal. He holds a knife—symbol of his martyrdom by flaying—and a scroll. A radiant halo glows above his head, indicating his sanctity. In the distant background, a small group is seen raising a tree or cross, suggesting the hardships and missions of the apostles. The figure is calm and composed, captured with elegant drapery and classical symmetry.
The second engraving, from Matthew Chapter XIV, depicts the moment when “John Baptist’s head was brought in a charger & given to the damsel.” In the foreground, a Roman soldier presents the severed head of John the Baptist on a platter to Salome, who accepts it with poised detachment. Courtiers and women watch in a palace with grand colonnades and a deep interior space, adding depth and drama to the scene. The engraving is filled with movement and tension, capturing the political and spiritual violence of the event.
The third engraving, from James Epistle I, Chapter 1, shows “St. James the Great the Apostle.” James stands barefoot with a large pilgrim’s staff and book, symbolising his travels and teachings. A radiant halo and dove of the Holy Spirit appear above him. In the background, a landscape unfolds with scattered trees and figures, including a structure possibly referencing his missionary work. James is shown with flowing hair and robes, projecting strength and devotion.
Condition summary: All three engravings are in good condition. Light toning with some mild foxing, mainly in the margins. A faint water stain is visible near the top of the middle sheet. No tears or repairs. Strong impressions with sharp detail. Paper is stable and suitable for framing.
Framing tips: These works display beautifully in uniform black, dark wood, or antique gold frames. Use a soft cream or ivory mount to highlight the aged paper. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the engravings and prevent fading over time.

Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Vision of Candlesticks, Apostle Jude & Judgment of Angels (1735)
This dramatic and theologically rich set of three antique engravings, published in 1735, illustrates apocalyptic and apostolic themes from the Book of Revelation and the Epistle of St. Jude. Executed in detailed copper engraving, each scene presents spiritual visions, divine authority, and prophetic symbolism with powerful visual intensity. Ideal for collectors of esoteric religious art or as a striking triptych display.
The first engraving, from Revelation Chapter I, is titled “The Vision of the Seven Golden Candlesticks.” It shows the Apostle John falling to the ground in awe as he beholds Christ standing among seven candlesticks, with stars in his hand and a sword issuing from his mouth. Christ appears elevated on clouds, radiant and commanding, symbolising divine authority over the churches. The candlesticks represent the seven churches of Asia, and the vision initiates John's apocalyptic revelation. The imagery is intense and mystical, filled with light, cloud, and motion.
The second engraving, from the Epistle of Jude, illustrates “The Apostate Angels reserved as Prisoners in Chains of Darkness to the Judgment of the Great Day.” An angel descends from the heavens bearing chains, binding demonic figures who writhe in terror as beams of divine light strike them. The Apostle Jude, seated below with a scroll and astonished gaze, points to the celestial vision. The composition is dramatic, balancing divine justice with earthly witness, and filled with cloud formations, angelic figures, and dynamic motion. It vividly conveys the judgment and order of the unseen spiritual realm.
The third engraving shows “St. Jude the Apostle” standing upon a stone pedestal, carrying a large wooden cross...
