About the Item

Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Christ Crowned, Crucified & Tempted in the Wilderness This powerful trio of antique engravings, published in 1735, presents three deeply emotional and symbolically rich scenes from the New Testament. Each print was produced using the copper engraving technique, offering fine linear detail and dramatic contrast. Together, they depict Christ’s humiliation, crucifixion, and spiritual trial, making the group especially resonant for collectors of religious prints or those seeking a meaningful visual narrative. The first engraving, from Matthew Chapter XXVII, is titled "Christ Crowned with Thorns." It depicts Christ seated in a dark chamber, mocked and tortured by Roman soldiers. One man kneels before him with a stick, while another places a crown of thorns on Christ’s bowed head. The pose captures both his physical suffering and spiritual endurance. The dramatic interior setting, with deep shadows and heavy masonry, intensifies the emotional impact. The second engraving, also from Matthew XXVII, shows "Christ Crucified." It presents the crucifixion scene on Golgotha, with Christ in the centre flanked by two thieves. Soldiers, onlookers, and women—including the Virgin Mary—stand at the foot of the cross. A Roman officer on horseback gestures upward, while a ladder leans toward the cross in preparation for Christ’s removal. The sky is darkened, and the composition filled with layered human responses: grief, awe, and confusion. This is a monumental depiction of Christ’s death. The third engraving, from Mark Chapter I, captures a less frequently depicted moment: Christ’s temptation in the wilderness. Christ is shown seated in a desert landscape, surrounded by lions, a bear, snakes, and other wild beasts. To the left, a horned figure representing Satan gestures toward him, while angels descend from the sky in rays of divine light. This scene, filled with rich symbolism, speaks to endurance, temptation, and divine presence amid chaos. The lower inscription quotes Mark 1:13: “And he was there in the wilderness forty days tempted of Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.” Condition summary: All three engravings are in good condition. Light general toning with minor foxing and a faint water stain near the lower edge of the first sheet. One sheet with a repair. Impressions are crisp and detailed. Paper is strong and well-preserved. Framing tips: Display as a unified triptych in matching dark wood, black, or silver-toned frames. Use warm ivory or parchment mounts to highlight the aged paper. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the fine engraving lines and prevent fading. Technique: Engraving Maker: Unknown (some signed), European, 1735
