About the Item
Set of 2 Biblical Engravings – Christ’s Resurrection & St. Andrew the Apostle (1735)
This evocative set of two antique engravings, published in 1735, captures pivotal moments from the New Testament—the appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene following the Resurrection, and a portrait of St. Andrew the Apostle with his martyr’s cross. Executed in detailed copper engraving, both prints showcase the elegant linework and theological symbolism characteristic of early 18th-century religious illustration. Perfect as a paired display or addition to a sacred art collection.
The first engraving, from John Chapter XX, is titled *“Christ appears to Mary Magdalene after his Resurrection.”* This powerful scene takes place just outside the tomb, as the risen Christ, still bearing the marks of the crucifixion, appears to Mary Magdalene. He holds a spade, alluding to his initial appearance to her as a gardener. Mary kneels before him in astonishment and reverence, extending her hand but held back by Christ’s gentle gesture—echoing his words, *“Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father.”* A shadowy group of onlookers is visible in the distance, framed by trees and rocky terrain. The artist captures this tender moment of revelation and recognition with emotional depth and classical balance. The engraving is signed by D. Durand.
The second engraving, from Matthew Chapter IV, verse 18, presents *“St. Andrew the Apostle.”* Depicted as a barefoot figure standing atop a pedestal, Andrew leans against the diagonal X-shaped cross, or crux decussata, on which he was traditionally martyred. A radiant halo encircles his head, and his gaze is directed upward, conveying faith and fortitude. The background features a landscape with boats, fishermen, and figures hauling nets—referring to Andrew’s origins as a fisherman and his calling by Christ. This engraving celebrates Andrew’s enduring role as a symbol of humility and missionary courage.
Condition summary: Both prints are in good condition. Light toning with scattered foxing, mainly in the margins. No tears or repairs noted. Strong impressions with clear detail throughout. The paper remains stable and suitable for framing.
Framing tips: These engravings pair well in matching classic black, walnut, or dark gold frames. Use off-white or cream mounts to enhance the tone of the paper. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the fine linework and prevent fading.
