Blackfoot Crossing: Indigenous People in the Great North-West, The Graphic 1882
About the Item
Title: *In the Great North-West with the Marquis of Lorne, XVIII – Blackfoot Crossing* - Published in The Graphic, January 28, 1882.
Description: This hand-colored wood engraving, published in The Graphic on January 28, 1882, is part of a series documenting travels in the North-West territories of Canada with the Marquis of Lorne. The scene, titled *Blackfoot Crossing*, portrays a group of Blackfoot Indigenous people crossing a river with their horses and supplies. The Blackfoot, an Indigenous tribe in the Great Plains, are shown in traditional attire, adorned with feathers and beaded clothing.
The print captures the moment as they enter the water on horseback, making their way to the other side. Several figures are leading or riding horses, and a few of the riders have improvised rafts to carry their possessions across. In the foreground, a warrior appears to be preparing his horse while others lead their animals into the water. The vibrant, sweeping landscape in the background shows the vast expanse of the prairie, with the sun setting in a golden sky, reflecting off the calm waters of the river.
The engraving was based on a sketch by Sydney P. Hall, The Graphic’s special artist who traveled with the Marquis of Lorne, the Governor General of Canada at the time. The series of engravings provides a visual account of their exploration of Canada’s western territories, documenting encounters with Indigenous peoples and the rugged, untamed landscape of the region.
About the Publication and Technique: The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper known for its high-quality wood engravings and detailed visual reports from around the world. The publication frequently featured illustrations from artists who traveled with notable figures to document significant events and expeditions. This engraving is part of a larger series showcasing the travels of the Marquis of Lorne in the North-West territories, providing readers with an illustrated narrative of the Indigenous peoples and landscapes encountered.
The print was created using wood engraving techniques, in which artists carved the image into wood blocks for printing. This particular print was then hand-colored, giving life to the scene with rich hues that emphasize the cultural dress and natural surroundings.
