About the Item

Original heliogravure by Brassaï (1899–1984) published in the first issue of Verve magazine, the visionary Parisian publication founded by Tériade. Known for his deeply humanistic vision and poetic approach to photography, Brassaï here captures an abstracted view of nude stone sculptures, reducing bodies to form, shadow, and tactile surface. In this intimate and sensuous composition, the contours of classical sculpture become a study in texture and volume. The photograph is less a representation of sculpture and more a meditation on the sculptural nature of the body itself. The close cropping and overlapping figures evoke a surreal, dreamlike quality. This original heliogravure was printed in Paris in 1937 using one of the most refined and enduring photomechanical processes, known for its depth and tonal delicacy. Framed in black-lacquered solid wood, the image is shown here in a digital mock-up. The final framing will be executed after purchase, tailored to the collector. Matboard proportions may vary slightly to best highlight the work. Technique: Original heliogravure From Verve, Volume I, Number 1 Published in Paris, 1937 Excellent vintage condition Dimensions: 3.5 (d) × 36 (w) × 43 (h) cm This original heliogravure by Brassaï features a close-up of classical nude sculptures, drawing the viewer into a sensual and abstract world of form and surface. Originally published in the first edition of Verve in 1937, it is a striking example of Brassaï’s unique ability to reveal poetry in detail. A rare and collectible piece of photographic history, beautifully framed for contemporary interiors.
