About the Item

Original heliogravure by Brassaï (1899–1984) published in the prestigious first issue of Verve, the avant-garde art magazine founded by Tériade. This particular image captures a serene plaster bust resting atop a rustic wooden stand in what appears to be a sculptor’s studio. The photograph is a quiet celebration of artistic process and form, highlighting the timeless beauty of sculpted portraiture. The strong vertical composition and soft lighting give the work a classical solemnity while also evoking the intimacy of an artist’s private workspace. Brassaï’s fascination with texture and the interplay between light and volume is evident in this poetic image. This heliogravure was printed in Paris in 1937 using one of the most sophisticated photomechanical techniques available at the time, offering remarkable tonal depth and fine detail. Framed in high-quality black-lacquered wood, shown here in a digital mock-up. Final framing will be custom executed after purchase to suit the buyer. Mount proportions may vary slightly for optimal presentation. Technique: Original heliogravure From Verve, Volume I, Number 1 Printed in Paris, 1937 Excellent vintage condition Dimensions: 3.5 (d) × 36 (w) × 43 (h) cm Vintage original heliogravure by Brassaï, featured in the inaugural issue of Verve magazine in 1937. The image captures a classical bust resting on a sculptor’s stool, embodying Brassaï’s talent for poetic observation. A timeless black and white photographic print presented in a custom black-lacquered frame, ideal for collectors of fine photography and mid-century European art.

1934 Remie Lohse Photograph for Vogue
By Remie Lohse
Located in New York, NY
Remie Lohse was born in Puerto Rico, studied painting in Denmark, and settled in New York in 1928, where he became a professional photographer. In the 1930s he was a freelancer who specialized in advertising and magazine features, and shot covers for Vogue. If he often focused on the high life, seen in this couple stepping out on the town, he also shot humble subjects. He was more interested in his art than a particular milieu, and many of his photographs are little masterpieces. His contemporary Gilbert Seldes, the noted Vanity Fair media critic and “public intellectual” (not to mention father of actress Marian Seldes), featured Lohse in his 1934 book 'This is New York, The First Modern Photographic Book of New York.' In 1939 Lohse came out with his own book titled 'The Miniature Camera in Professional Hands.' Our photograph was one of three shot by Lohse for a 1934 Vogue article titled “High Spots and Low Music." If the photograph (image size 4 1/4" x 6") show a couple making the nocturnal rounds of Manhattan restaurants, bars, and jazz clubs, the story itself also covers the daytime meeting places of the ladies who lunch. The twist is that Lohse’s model was the author herself, Elena Mumm Thornton, and her husband James Worth...
