About the Item

Original heliogravure by Brassaï, titled Henri Matisse’s Aviary, published in Verve, Vol. I No. 1 (December 1937), Éditions Verve, Paris. This rare and atmospheric image captures the aviary inside Henri Matisse’s studio in the south of France. Dozens of birds perch and flutter behind wire mesh, silhouetted against a soft, luminous backdrop. Between the cages, tropical plants and light create an almost surreal composition. Rather than simply documenting the scene, Brassaï transforms it into a poetic meditation on stillness, nature, and artistic space. Brassaï (1899–1984), born Gyula Halász, was one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Closely associated with the Surrealists and praised by Picasso himself, he contributed to the legendary art publication Verve, which was founded by Tériade and printed by Mourlot Frères, the famous Parisian lithographers. This print comes from the first edition of Verve’s inaugural issue, printed in rich photogravure (heliogravure) on fine paper. The artwork is presented in a handcrafted black lacquered wood frame with neutral archival mat (example shown). The final framing will be done to order for the buyer using museum-quality materials.
