About the Item

The Bucentaure – Antique Engraving of the Venetian State Barge, c.1802 This finely detailed antique engraving depicts The Bucentaure, the grand ceremonial barge of the Doges of Venice. This ornate vessel was used for the annual “Marriage of the Sea” (Sposalizio del Mare), a ritual that symbolized the maritime power and sovereignty of the Venetian Republic. The Doge would be rowed into the Adriatic and cast a gold ring into the water to solemnize Venice's dominion over the sea. The engraving captures the barge in profile, with its long hull elaborately decorated and lined with rows of oars extending into the water. At the stern stands a raised pavilion covered with a domed canopy, under which the Doge and high officials would have sat. A flowing banner with the Venetian lion emblem unfurls from the mast, and the finely drawn figures, ornamental carvings, and architectural elements convey the magnificence and pageantry of the Republic's maritime ceremonies. This version of The Bucentaure most closely resembles the vessel used in the 18th century before the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. The engraving was likely published around 1802, during a time when interest in the former glory of Venice remained strong in both Britain and continental Europe. Signed at bottom right: “Newton Sculp.” (engraved by Newton) The print provides an important historical visual reference to one of the most iconic vessels in European ceremonial naval history and is a striking example of early 19th-century engraving technique. Condition report: Good condition overall. Strong impression with light age-toning and faint spotting, mainly in the background. Margins intact. Minor foxing at left edge, outside the image area. Protected by acid free matting board. Framing tips: This engraving is well suited to a classic gold or walnut frame with a soft cream or beige mat to highlight the historic and architectural details. A dramatic piece for libraries, collectors of Venetian history, or nautical interiors. Technique: Engraving Maker: Newton, likely British, circa 1802
