About the Item

Bust of Christ – Engraving by Crispijn van de Passe I, circa 1600 This finely executed early 17th-century engraving by Crispijn van de Passe the Elder (1564–1637) presents a radiant bust portrait of Christ, shown with long hair, a beard, and a calm, solemn expression. The portrait is surrounded by a circular halo of divine light and encircled by a Latin inscription from the Song of Songs: “Dilectus meus candidus et rubicundus... species prae filiis hominum,” which translates to “My beloved is white and ruddy... distinguished among ten thousand.” Rendered in delicate line work and fine cross-hatching, this image reflects the early Baroque devotional style, emphasizing both idealized beauty and spiritual presence. Four cherubic faces appear in the corners, reinforcing the sacred character of the composition. A Latin dedication is engraved in the lower margin, addressed to Joannes Barutius, a court advisor and legal scholar, suggesting the print may have been a commission or presentation gift. The text praises Christ as the savior of the world and includes several references to his divine mission and redemptive role. Crispijn van de Passe I was one of the most important engravers of his generation, working in Cologne and later in Utrecht. His workshop produced widely distributed portraits, religious scenes, and emblematic images. This portrait of Christ stands out as a prime example of his religious output, combining technical refinement with deep spiritual expression. Medium: Engraving on laid paper Date: Circa 1600 Origin: Cologne or South Netherlands Condition: Good condition. Strong, mounted on stronger paper, clean impression with deep contrast. Minor age toning and a small spot in the facial area. Margins complete with all inscriptions clearly legible. Verso blank. Framing suggestion: A simple dark wood or black frame with an off-white or ivory mat would suit the dignified tone of the print. Use museum-grade glass to protect the fine line work. This print displays beautifully as a devotional piece or alongside other Old Master engravings.
