About the Item
Cape of Good Hope & Table Bay – Dutch Ships at Anchor, 1777 Engraving
Antique print titled 'Reede van de Kaap de Goede Hoop', a striking 18th-century engraving depicting the anchorage at Table Bay, with the iconic flat summit of Table Mountain rising in the background. This vivid hand-colored scene offers a historically rich view of the Cape of Good Hope, a critical outpost for Dutch East India Company (VOC) vessels en route to the East Indies.
The print shows a panoramic view of the harbor during the Dutch colonial period, bustling with maritime activity. Multiple ships of the VOC dominate the right-hand side of the composition—one in mid-cannon fire, others either anchored or sailing into the bay. Dutch flags and ensigns fly prominently, reflecting the naval power of the Netherlands during the 18th century. Smaller boats ferry men and cargo from ship to shore, suggesting the daily activity of this essential resupply station. In the background lies the Dutch settlement of Cape Town, nestled between the shore and the surrounding mountainous terrain, including the Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.
On the left foreground, indigenous figures are shown under palm-like foliage, illustrating European perceptions of Africa and its people. The contrast between the native figures and the European maritime power is typical of prints produced for European audiences at the time, mixing documentation with elements of the exotic and the picturesque.
This print originates from 'Nieuwe algemene beschryving van de Kaap de Goede Hoop', a monumental work first published in 1777, chronicling Dutch activities and geography at the Cape. It was engraved by S. Fokke, P. Conradi, and V. van der Plaats, based on a design by H. Kobell after an original drawing. The level of detail and hand-coloring make this a desirable and decorative piece, both as a historical document and as a work of maritime art.
Condition report:
Good condition overall. Some minor age-related toning and light creases near the margins. Colors remain vibrant and clear. Please inspect the image closely for additional details.
Framing tips:
This print would present beautifully in a dark wood or black frame with a cream or light beige mat, which will complement both the sea tones and the earthy greens of the landscape. A museum-quality non-reflective glass is recommended to protect the hand-coloring.
