About the Item

Cardinal, Commoner, and Florentine Noble in 15th-Century Italian Costume This set of three beautifully hand-colored costume prints captures the diverse social spectrum of Renaissance Italy through detailed depictions of three archetypal figures: a high-ranking Cardinal, a plebeian dressed in everyday garb, and a Florentine nobleman. Together, they offer an insightful visual narrative of class, status, and civic identity in 15th-century Italian life. Plate No.55 shows a seated *Cardinal*, magnificently robed in red—the unmistakable symbol of ecclesiastical power and proximity to the papacy. Seated authoritatively on a stone throne with a gilt patterned backdrop, he holds a document and a sword, suggesting a moment of official investiture or diplomatic ceremony. His solemn expression, the richness of his vestments, and the hierarchical symbolism of his posture all convey the merging of church and political authority so prevalent in Renaissance Italy. This figure encapsulates the height of ecclesiastical grandeur. In contrast, Plate No.56 portrays a *Costumer Plébéien* or common citizen. His dress is modest, consisting of a belted mustard tunic with a small pouch and simple green leggings, topped with a red cap. He stands casually beside a woman and child, engaged in what appears to be a conversation or transaction. This representation of everyday life stands as a vital record of how the lower classes presented themselves—practical, layered clothing fit for labor or street trade. The figures are captured with subtle expressions and modest poses, evoking the social foundation of the urban working class. Plate No.57 offers a return to elite fashion with a standing *Noble Florentine*. His youthful appearance, rich golden tunic with white fur-lined vest, and bright green hose speak to the opulence and confidence of Florence’s merchant aristocracy. His walk is poised and elegant, his attire layered with courtly flair, indicating affluence and fashion consciousness typical of the Medici-era elite. His side profile and composed stride echo the sculptural grace found in Renaissance portraiture and public statuary. This compilation is a visual essay in social stratification, contrasting religious might, civic simplicity, and noble sophistication. The prints are particularly attractive for collectors focused on Renaissance history, costume studies, or Italian cultural identity. Condition: All three prints are in good antique condition. Minor age-related foxing appears mostly in the margins, with strong color retention and intact plate borders. No tears or creases observed. The Cardinal is highlighted with gold. Framing Tips: Display these prints in a linear arrangement to emphasize the contrast between social roles. A light ivory mat with equidistant spacing will help maintain visual balance. Use a refined wood frame—dark walnut or ebony—for an elegant finish. Float mounting is an excellent option if you want to show the plate marks. Opt for UV-filtering glass to ensure long-term preservation and color stability.
