About the Item

Title: Catholic Episcopal Rites – Rare 1734 Engraving of Bishop's Ceremonial Duties Description: This finely executed 18th-century copperplate engraving presents six distinct ecclesiastical scenes depicting the ceremonial functions and public roles of a Catholic bishop. Published in 1734 as part of *The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World*, this detailed and carefully composed sheet reflects the solemnity and grandeur associated with episcopal rites in the Roman Catholic tradition. Each vignette captures a different moment in the bishop’s spiritual, liturgical, and symbolic journey. The top two panels focus on the 'Holy Oils', essential in many Catholic sacraments. The left panel, titled On porte en procession les saintes huiles (The procession of the holy oils), shows a formal line of clergy escorting sacred vessels filled with chrism and other consecrated oils. On the right, 'Bénédiction des saintes huiles' (Blessing of the holy oils) captures the moment of consecration during the Chrism Mass, a key rite during Holy Week. The bishop stands at the altar surrounded by priests, incense rising in the background. The middle row addresses the bishop’s public ministry. The left image shows *Manière dont l’évêque est reçu à la visite de son diocèse* (How a bishop is received during his visit to the diocese), portraying his ceremonial entry on horseback under a canopy—a sign of his pastoral authority. To the right, *L’évêque fait l’exhortation pastorale* (The bishop gives a pastoral exhortation), shows the bishop addressing a seated congregation, delivering moral and doctrinal instruction. The bottom two scenes reflect both reverence and mortality. The left panel, *On baise la main de l’évêque* (Kissing the bishop’s hand), highlights a traditional gesture of veneration and ecclesiastical respect. The final scene, *Le corps de l’évêque est exposé dans l’église* (The bishop’s body lies in state in the church), presents a solemn view of the bishop’s funeral, with his body laid in a catafalque surrounded by clergy, candles, and the trappings of liturgical mourning. The engraving offers a rare visual catechism of episcopal life and death, rendered with reverence, architectural depth, and ritual precision. It is both a document of historical religious practice and a work of devotional artistry. Condition report: Good condition. Strong plate impression and crisp detailing throughout. Light foxing and toning around the edges, with a small marginal tear on the right-hand side. No restorations or losses in the printed area. Full sheet with wide margins intact. Framing suggestions: A tall vertical frame with a cream or parchment-colored archival mat will best highlight the multi-scene layout. Separate the rows slightly within the mat window to emphasize each vignette. A black or dark walnut wood frame adds contrast and a formal finish. Use UV-protective glazing and acid-free materials to preserve the paper’s integrity and engraved detail. A float mount is also an excellent option to showcase the plate mark and full sheet edge.
