About the Item

Cheerful Clown Balancing on a Drum – “Sylvesterlust” by Alfred Schwarz, c.1895 Description: This delightful color lithograph, titled “Sylvesterlust” (New Year’s Eve Joy), was created by Alfred Schwarz in the late 19th century. It is part of the renowned series *Moderne Kunst in Meister-Holzschnitten* (Modern Art in Master Woodcuts), published by Richard Bong in Berlin around 1895. The image captures a moment of playful festivity, as a clown dressed in bright red-and-white stripes stands atop a large drum, playing a mandolin with visible glee. Schwarz’s depiction is lively and humorous, evoking the lightheartedness and music of New Year’s Eve celebrations. The clown’s expression, with a whimsical hat and a broad smile, perfectly conveys the carefree mood of the season. The fine lithographic technique brings out the rich colors and textured shading, enhancing the vividness of the scene. Beyond its charming subject, this work is a fine example of German lithographic art from the late 19th century. It reflects the era’s fascination with popular entertainment and carnival life, blending fine art and popular culture. Jongleur of the Medieval Times: A Musician's Craft in the Middle Ages, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
This hand-colored engraving, titled "Jongleur," portrays a medieval entertainer, a precursor to modern-day musicians and performers. The term "jongleur" denotes a versatile artist commonly seen in medieval courts and public spaces, engaging audiences with music, poetry, and storytelling. In this print, the jongleur is shown playing a flute-like instrument, focused intently on his performance. Ballet und Pantomime "Harlekin", plate #10.
By Walter Schnackenberg
Located in Chicago, IL
Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East. In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations. His drawings, illustrations, folio prints, and posters are highly sought today for their exceedingly imaginative qualities, enchanting subject matter, and arresting use of color.
