About the Item

Children’s Traditional Dress from Urk with Embroidered Aprons and Silver Details This charming early 20th-century lithograph captures children from the island of Urk, one of the most culturally distinct regions in the Netherlands, depicted in their traditional Sunday and festival dress. Originally published as Plate XIX in *The National Costumes of Holland*, this detailed illustration was designed for educational and decorative purposes, celebrating regional Dutch identity through costume. At the center of the image stands a young girl dressed in a black satin under-cap topped by an intricately shaped white lace net cap, held in place by a silver oorijzer with terminal ornaments. Her outfit includes a black baai under-bodice, with short patterned sleeves, a neatly pleated red damask corset trimmed with yellow braid, and a two-colored petticoat showing a striped wool underskirt with a red and white braid hem. The white apron she wears has been lovingly embroidered with her initials, a disappearing tradition noted in the accompanying text. The older girl to her right is dressed similarly but has transitioned to a more mature apron of black cashmere. She wears a five-strand coral necklace with a gold clasp, indicating a stage between youth and adulthood. On the left, a boy in traditional Urker dress wears a red and white striped baai shirt with a wide red cloth collar, fastened by two gold buttons. Over this is a double-breasted black coat and loose breeches secured by a row of large silver buttons at the waist. A black felt hat with a broad ribbon completes his costume. Each child’s expression and posture are rendered with care and a touch of whimsy, holding toys or clasping their aprons, framed against a pale Delft tile motif with blue ships. This print was produced using high-quality chromolithography, a color printing technique that brings out the richness of the textiles, lacework, and accessories. Condition: This original plate is in very good condition, with fresh colors and crisp detail. The margins are clean with only minor signs of age near the edges, and no tears or foxing are present. The paper has aged evenly to a soft cream tone. Framing Tips: To showcase this piece, consider using a natural or white wooden frame with a museum-grade off-white or cream mat. This will emphasize the delicacy of the costumes and the tile background while protecting the paper from exposure. UV-filtered glass is recommended to preserve the vibrant inks over time. An excellent candidate for a themed gallery wall or a feature in a hallway, nursery, or cultural collection.
