About the Item

Chinese & Japanese Dragon Motif Print – Antique Lithograph of Textile Designs, c.1869 This captivating chromolithograph features richly colored Chinese and Japanese textile patterns, centered on a dynamic and symbolic dragon motif. Plate XIII from L'Ornement Polychrome, it vividly reproduces traditional East Asian designs used in imperial fabrics, ceremonial robes, and decorative arts, offering a striking display of power, elegance, and cultural symbolism. The top section of the print is filled with a repeating golden field populated by sinuous blue dragons amid flowering peonies and swirling clouds. Each dragon, with its expressive face, scaled body, and clawed feet, embodies imperial authority, strength, and auspicious energy—key elements in both Chinese and Japanese mythological traditions. The floral elements balance the composition, representing prosperity, peace, and natural beauty. Below the main panel is a grid of smaller motifs and symbolic forms, including stylized waves, lotus blossoms, cloud scrolls, and abstract emblems. These were drawn from East Asian embroidery, porcelain decoration, lacquerware, and architectural elements. The color palette—featuring rich tones of gold, vermillion, indigo, jade green, and coral red—faithfully mirrors the pigments used in traditional Asian craftwork. This lithograph was printed in Paris around 1869 by Firmin-Didot and lithographed by Jesta, based on studies collected under the direction of A. Racinet. It uses the chromolithographic process to extraordinary effect, layering colors with precision to replicate the luxurious appearance of silk and brocade textiles. This plate not only documents historical design but reflects the intense European fascination with East Asian art in the late 19th century. The Japonisme and Chinoiserie movements drew heavily from such motifs, influencing Art Nouveau, textiles, and interiors throughout Europe. Condition: Very good condition. Strong paper with bold, clean colors. Minor age-toning to outer margins and a few light foxing spots at the top edge. Image area remains untouched. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: A deep black or lacquer-red frame enhances the regal feel of the dragon motifs. Use a gold or warm cream mat to highlight the background tone and give the piece a balanced, harmonious presentation. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Firmin-Didot, Paris, after A. Racinet, c.1869

Large Framed Japanese Embroidery Dragon Tapestry
Located in Atlanta, GA
An impressive Japanese embroidery tapestry circa 1890s Meiji period, presented with brocade border on linen canvas in a Lucite shadow box. The stunning design features three dragons coiling and flying in the clouds. The high relief technique used to render the dragons using mostly the silver threads gives this piece a tremendous sense of motion. The most auspicious mythological creature in Japan and China, dragons were a very popular motif in textile art. In this particular piece, it is the impressive size, the superb craftsmanship, the profuse use of silver threads and near perfect condition that set it apart. Japanese Meiji textiles were widely exhibited in the west during turn of the 20th century at the international exposition. It was used to showcase the Japanese aesthetics with the techniques at their pinnacle. These expositions solidified the country's images overseas and felled the Japanese craze in the west, which turned out to be a long-lasting influence on the western art. Many pieces were purchased and stayed in the west. It is likely this estate piece was from one of the expositions based on its high quality. For two similar dragon tapestries...
