About the Item

Chinese Ornament Print – Antique Lithograph of Archaic Bronze Motifs, c.1869 This evocative chromolithograph from the 19th century showcases an extraordinary collection of decorative patterns inspired by ancient Chinese bronzes. Plate X from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, the print captures a series of low-relief motifs and surface designs derived from ritual vessels and ceremonial objects of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, dating as far back as 1600 BCE. Dominated by deep green and oxidized bronze tones, the composition features a vertical mosaic of intricate friezes, each illustrating stylized dragons, cloud scrolls, thunder patterns (leiwen), and taotie masks—iconic motifs in early Chinese art symbolizing mythic power, spiritual protection, and cosmic order. At the center, a vertical cartouche in olive green highlights a more geometric variant of the thunder pattern, bordered by finely incised scrollwork. These forms were originally cast into bronze using complex piece-mold techniques unique to ancient China, and their significance was often both religious and symbolic. They adorned ritual vessels used in ancestral worship and state ceremonies, making them integral to the spiritual and political life of early Chinese civilization. This print was produced in Paris around 1869 by the prestigious printing house Firmin-Didot, and lithographed by Baguez after drawings compiled under the direction of A. Racinet. Chromolithography—a printing process capable of replicating subtle gradations of color and fine textures—was used to recreate the metallic sheen and mineral-like patina of ancient bronzes, giving the plate a striking sense of depth and authenticity. Highly valued by 19th-century designers and collectors, such illustrations introduced Western audiences to the visual vocabulary of East Asian art. They influenced the growing interest in Japonisme and Chinoiserie during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, impacting European decorative arts and architecture. Condition: Excellent condition. Crisp impression and strong, even color tones. Very mild age-related toning to margins and a few faint fox marks at the lower edge, well outside the image area. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: A dark wood or black lacquer frame will echo the ancient aesthetic of the design. A pale jade or soft ivory mat will enhance the print’s complex green palette and emphasize the ornamental detail. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Firmin-Didot, Paris, after A. Racinet, c.1869
