About the Item

Title: Christ Praying in Gethsemane Engraving – Luke XXII Garden of Olives c.1735 Description: This moving antique engraving titled “Christ praying in the Mount” illustrates Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, as described in St. Luke Chapter XXII. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures one of the most poignant moments before the Passion, where Jesus accepts the cup of suffering. At the centre, Christ is depicted kneeling in sorrowful contemplation, supported tenderly by an angel. His eyes are lifted towards heaven, where a radiant chalice appears in the clouds, symbolising the cup of sacrifice he is about to drink. The angel’s gentle touch and compassionate gaze convey divine comfort amidst human anguish. The surrounding landscape is rendered in dramatic tonal shading, with dark clouds opening to reveal the light of divine providence, heightening the scene’s emotional and theological impact. Executed with fine copperplate engraving technique, the print showcases meticulous linear detailing, cross-hatching, and tonal contrasts that define the drapery folds, angelic form, and atmospheric clouds. Though unsigned, it is credited lower right to “Em. Roberts Sculp.” and stylistically aligns with designs after Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, widely used in English folio Bibles as theological teaching tools and devotional illustrations. Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into early Protestant visual theology, biblical narrative traditions, and the devotional life of the early modern household. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. Plate impression remains strong with engraved details crisp and well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age, no major tears or losses. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging to enhance its classical devotional presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, prayer room, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding historical depth, narrative resonance, and contemplative beauty to any collection.
