About the Item
Circa 1830 Schinz Prints: Tattooed Men of Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands
This set of two black-and-white lithographs from circa 1830 by Heinrich Rudolf Schinz depicts tattooed men from Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.
Schinz, a teacher of medicine and natural history in Zurich, included these prints in his volume *Naturhistorische Abbildungen der Saeugethiere*, which covered humans from non-European regions. The lithographs were crafted by Karl Joseph Brodtmann.
1. Ein Tatuirter aus Nukahiwa (6.6 x 10.5 inches): Shows a full-body portrait of a tattooed man holding a club and a basket, highlighting the traditional tattoos of the Marquesas Islands. The sheet is bright, with some scattered foxing.
2. Ein Tatuirter Mann aus Nukahiwa (6.6 x 9.3 inches): Focuses on a detailed upper-body portrait of a tattooed man, emphasizing intricate tattoo designs on the face, neck, and chest. The print has light soiling.
These prints are valuable representations of cultural tattoo practices among the indigenous people of the Marquesas Islands during the 19th century.
