This lithograph depicts Arisaema ringens, commonly known as the Cobra Lily. It is a hand-colored botanical illustration from Louis van Houtte's *Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe*, published between 1854 and 1855. The Cobra Lily is native to Japan and is known for its unique, hooded flower, which resembles a cobra ready to strike—hence its English name. The plant's green and dark purple-striped spathe and its large, glossy leaves make it a striking specimen both in nature and in this detailed artwork. Van Houtte’s illustration captures the intricate texture of the plant, using shading and hand coloring to emphasize the deep folds and veins in the leaves and the rich coloration of the flower.
