About the Item

Columba Turbita – Antique Pigeon Print by Nozeman & Sepp, 1829 This finely hand-coloured engraving depicts the Columba Turbita, a distinctive pigeon breed known in the Netherlands as the "meeuwduif" or gull pigeon. The bird is shown perched on a simple wooden stand, allowing its plumage and physical features to be clearly studied. Its soft blue-grey colouring, slightly iridescent neck feathers, and distinctive frilled breast are rendered with exceptional detail, characteristic of the meticulous natural history plates from the celebrated ornithological series Nederlandsche Vogelen. Published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829, this monumental work by Cornelis Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp was the first comprehensive study of Dutch birds. It is highly regarded for both its scientific importance and the artistic quality of its illustrations. Each bird was depicted as observed in life, often close to life-size, and the engravings were printed on high-quality laid paper before being hand-coloured. The inclusion of the original descriptive text page enhances the value and authenticity of this example, providing 19th-century ornithological insight into the breed’s characteristics, habits, and origins. The Columba Turbita was admired for its elegance and distinctive posture, traits that made it a popular subject among breeders and fanciers. Collectors prize Nederlandsche Vogelen prints for their combination of scientific accuracy, artistry, and historical significance, making them suitable for both ornithology collections and fine interior display. The accompanying original Dutch text page provides rich historical and scientific observations on the species, its behaviour, nesting habits, and physical characteristics, as understood in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Condition: Very good. Clean paper with mild age-related toning. No tears or repairs. Plate mark visible. Original text page included which has minimal age-related toning and two very small holes in margins. Framing tips: A warm off-white or cream mount will complement the soft grey-blue plumage, while a light oak, walnut, or gilded frame will enhance its decorative appeal. For a refined look, a black frame with a thin gilt slip can create contrast while keeping the focus on the bird. Use UV-protective glazing to preserve the delicate hand-colouring.
