About the Item

This evocative original copper engraving, featured in Arnoldus Montanus' "Die Unbekannte Neue Welt oder Beschreibung des Welt-teils Amerika und des Sud-Landes," presents a scene from the colonial period in New Spain. At its height, the viceroyalty of New Spain consisted of Mexico, much of Central America, parts of the West Indies, the southwestern and central United States, Florida, and the Philippines. Published in Amsterdam by Jacob Meurs in 1673, the image captures a moment of conflict, with indigenous figures and colonial invaders portrayed in mid-battle, under the gaze of an allegorical figure, symbolizing perhaps the strife and transformation brought by the conquest. Buildings reminiscent of European architecture suggest the imposition of a new order onto the landscape. Condition Report: The engraving is preserved with remarkable clarity, displaying fine lines and intricate details. Signs of aging may include slight yellowing of the paper, potential minor spots or foxing, and edge wear consistent with a document of this age. The margin is are not straight but the text is legible, indicating the piece has been maintained with care. No significant tears or losses disrupt the integrity of the image, making it a well-preserved artifact from the 17th century.
