About the Item

Costumes of a Knight, a Poet, and a Muse from Medieval Italy - 1845 This refined set of three hand-colored costume prints presents a compelling visual tableau of high medieval Italian society. Depicted are three historical figures — a Chevalier of Rhodes, the revered poet Petrarch, and his muse Laure — each captured in distinctive dress that reflects their role, era, and symbolism. Together, they form a thematic narrative of chivalry, intellect, and idealized beauty, embodying the spiritual and cultural aspirations of the 14th and 15th centuries. The first plate (No.43) features the Chevalier de Rhodes, a member of the Knights Hospitaller. Dressed in a dramatic black habit bearing the prominent white Maltese cross, he kneels in solemn devotion, his helmet resting beside him on a tree stump. His figure communicates both spiritual authority and martial nobility. The precision in the folds of the cloak and the quiet intensity of his expression make this portrayal both dignified and contemplative. In the second plate (No.44), we encounter Petrarch, one of the foundational figures of Renaissance humanism. Cloaked in a vivid red robe with scholarly gravitas, he clutches a book, symbolic of his literary pursuits and intellectual legacy. The figure is modestly posed, suggesting the contemplative nature of a poet deeply engaged with classical wisdom and emotional introspection. The fine detailing in the robe’s drapery and the serenity of his gaze lend an aura of dignity and quiet power. Finally, plate No.45 portrays Laure, Petrarch’s muse and the poetic embodiment of idealized love. Her delicate stance, fine features, and hands modestly placed over her heart and torso speak of purity and grace. Clad in a richly patterned green gown with floral ornamentation, her attire reflects both courtly elegance and symbolic richness. Her modest pose and gentle smile echo the spiritual idealization of women prevalent in courtly and Renaissance poetry. Together, these prints form a triad of devotion, intellect, and inspiration, ideal for collectors interested in costume history, medieval iconography, or poetic romanticism. Condition: The prints are in good condition with light age-related spotting, mostly in the margins. Color remains vibrant and the paper stable. Margins show minimal wear. Suitable for display. Framing Tips: Frame the three prints in a single row with equal spacing, using a cream or soft white mat to highlight their individual composition. A dark wood or matte black frame will enhance the richness of the colors. Avoid overly ornate frames to preserve the prints’ scholarly and historical feel. Use UV-protective glass to preserve the delicate tones.
