About the Item

Daniel in the Lions’ Den – Antique Hand-Coloured Engraving after Picart, 1727–1738 This powerful hand-coloured engraving depicts the biblical story of Daniel in the lions’ den, as described in Daniel VI:17. The scene shows Daniel clothed in a green robe and blue turban, his hands raised in prayer, while surrounded by lions within the dark, cavernous den. Despite the menace of the beasts, Daniel’s calm expression emphasizes his faith and divine protection. Skulls and bones in the foreground underscore the danger of his situation, while distant details of the cave add depth and atmosphere to the composition. The print originates from the monumental publishing project Naaukeurige beschryving der godtsdienst-plichten, kerk-zeden en gewoontens van alle volkeren der waereldt (1727–1738), the Dutch edition of Bernard Picart and Jean-Frédéric Bernard’s Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde. This work, published also in French and English, was the most ambitious and elaborate study of religious rites and moral teachings of its time, providing encyclopedic illustrations of biblical and global religious traditions. The engraving was made by M. Pool after a design by Bernard Picart (1673–1733). Picart, one of the foremost illustrators of the early 18th century, combined a refined engraving technique with vivid storytelling. His images remain some of the most compelling visual interpretations of biblical narratives and religious customs. Condition: Very good, with vibrant early hand-colouring. Some light toning to the margins, minor handling traces, and small age spots consistent with its age. Plate mark visible, wide margins well preserved. Framing tips: A gilt or gold-accented frame enhances the richness of the colouring and the drama of the scene. Alternatively, a dark walnut frame with a cream or lightly toned mat brings out the contrast between the deep cave shadows and Daniel’s bright attire. Technique: Hand-coloured engraving Maker: M.
