About the Item

The Dean of Westminster Bringing the Crown – Coronation of George IV, 1821 – Stipple and Mezzotint in Colours by Sir George Naylor A finely executed stipple and mezzotint engraving in rich colours, depicting the Dean of Westminster in a sumptuous cope carrying the Imperial State Crown upon a gold-embroidered cushion. This moment from the coronation of King George IV at Westminster Abbey on July 19, 1821, shows the Dean bringing the crown from the altar for the act of crowning. The detailed rendering captures the splendour of the ceremonial vestments, with deep blue and gold velvet lined in white silk, and the crown’s ornate setting and fleur-de-lis shapes clearly visible. Published in 1824 as part of Sir George Naylor’s official record of the coronation ceremonies, this print forms part of a magnificent series commemorating the grandeur and pageantry of the occasion. The clean, minimal background directs focus entirely to the regalia and the solemn ritual. Condition: Very good colour retention and impression. Crease at upper right and tear in lower right within the platemark border, pressed almost through the paper but not separating; light overall age toning; minor scattered foxing and handling marks in the margins. Platemark strong; paper otherwise sound and stable. Framing tips: Best displayed in a gilt frame to complement the regal tones, with a soft cream or light ivory mount to enhance the colours and preserve the full margins. Technique: Stipple and mezzotint engraving in colours Maker: Sir George Naylor (1764–1831), London, published 1824
