About the Item

Deathbed of Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange, circa 1647–1650 – Historic Dutch Engraving This remarkable and moving antique engraving depicts the final moments of Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange (1584–1647), who was one of the most influential figures of the Dutch Golden Age. Frederik Hendrik succeeded his half-brother, Prince Maurice of Nassau, as Stadtholder of the United Provinces and was instrumental in continuing the fight for Dutch independence from Spain during the Eighty Years’ War. Known for his military and diplomatic skills, he earned the title “The Good.” The engraving vividly captures the solemn scene of the dying Prince surrounded by his closest family members and high-ranking statesmen of the Dutch Republic. The large canopy bed, the richly detailed drapery, and the gathering of figures all reflect the ceremonial gravity of this royal moment. Below the main scene, a detailed legend identifies fifteen individuals present, including Prince Frederik Hendrik’s wife Amalia van Solms, his son William II, his daughter-in-law Mary Stuart (Princess Royal of England), statesmen, military officers, and court officials. This print was likely produced around 1647–1650, shortly after Frederik Hendrik’s death, as part of a commemorative series marking this significant event in Dutch history. The fine engraving technique, elaborate linework, and large scale are typical of 17th-century Dutch portrait prints intended for collectors and civic decoration. Such images were powerful political statements, reinforcing the House of Orange’s prestige and legitimacy during a critical period for the young Dutch Republic. Condition: Overall good for its age, with strong impressions and good preservation of details. Some toning and minor edge wear are visible, consistent with a print of this age. The original paper margins remain generous, adding to its authenticity. No major tears or losses. Framing Tip: To highlight the historical significance of this scene, consider mounting this engraving in a classic dark wood frame with a linen or neutral mount. Non-reflective museum glass will help preserve the delicate linework while giving it a refined presentation suited for a study, library, or collection of Dutch Golden Age prints.
