About the Item

The print by Anthony Oberman features a detailed study of various animal heads and anatomical elements. Here’s a comprehensive description of the etching: Composition: 1. Animal Heads: - The print showcases a collection of animal heads, including a horse, a goat, a cow, and a sheep. Each head is meticulously detailed, capturing the unique features and textures of the different animals. - The horse’s head is prominently positioned on the left, showing a profile view with fine details in the mane and facial structure. - The cow’s head, positioned centrally, is depicted with its horns and a calm expression. - The goat’s head is shown in two perspectives: a side profile and a partial front view, emphasizing its distinct horn structure. - The sheep’s head is included, adding to the diversity of the animal studies. 2. Anatomical Elements: - Below the animal heads, there is a detailed depiction of a skull, likely that of a sheep or goat, showing the bone structure. - The print also includes a detailed study of a hoof, showcasing Oberman’s interest in the anatomical accuracy of the animals he depicted. Artistic Elements: - Technique: Oberman’s etching technique is evident in the fine line work and intricate details, particularly in the fur, horns, and facial features of the animals. The use of light and shadow adds depth and realism to the studies. - Composition: The composition is arranged to display the heads and anatomical elements in a balanced and educational manner, highlighting the artist’s skill in rendering different textures and structures. - Background: The background is kept minimal, focusing solely on the animal studies to ensure that the viewer’s attention is directed towards the intricate details of the etchings. Condition: - The paper shows signs of aging, such as slight yellowing and minor spots, which are typical for prints of this age. - The edges of the paper are mostly intact, with some minor wear and small tears, particularly noticeable in the corners. Anthony Oberman (1781-1845) was a Dutch artist known for his detailed paintings and etchings, primarily focusing on animals, landscapes, and still lifes. Born and baptized in Amsterdam, he studied at the Stadstekenacademie (drawing academy) and became a member of the Koninklijke Academie in Amsterdam in 1833. Oberman's work is notable for its precision and attention to detail, particularly in his depictions of horses, which were popular among Amsterdam collectors. He also created portraits of horses for notable figures, such as the banker Adriaan van der Hoop, with some works now held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In his later years, Oberman specialized more in painting flower and fruit pieces, reflecting a shift in his artistic focus. His artworks have been sold at various auctions, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand euros, depending on the piece. For example, his still life paintings have fetched significant sums at Sotheby's and Christie's, illustrating his continued recognition and appreciation in the art world. Oberman's contributions to art, particularly his detailed studies of animals and rural scenes, have left a lasting impact, making his works valuable to collectors and art historians alike..

Horses - Etching by Thomas Holloway - 1810

Horses is an etching realized by Thomas Holloway for Johann Caspar Lavater's "Essays on Physiognomy, Designed to Promote the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind", London, Bensley, 1810. Good conditions. Johann Caspar Lavater was a swiss theologian and philosopher known throughout Europe for his studies on physiognomy. Following the physiognomy tradition of Della Porta and of many Renaissance and Baroque philosophers, he believed that the character of a person could be elucidated through examining their “lines of countenance" i.e. tracing a profile outline portrait. Being able to "read outside" was the key to "know the inside". Lavater's thought largely influenced Art in the late 18th and early 19th century, as in the case of Johann Fuseli and William Blake (who realized two etchings for Lavater's English edition of his Essay). Lavater was convinced that he could show his theories by analyzing the portraits of some of the main historical figures of the past, in some cases taken from paintings or (mainly for antiquity...
