About the Item

Dutch Admirals of Zeeland – Jan Evertse, Kornelis Evertse, and Louis van Boisot, c.1774 A finely engraved set of three 18th-century copperplate portraits depicting prominent naval commanders from the province of Zeeland in the Dutch Republic, each framed within an oval cartouche and identified by name and title beneath. From left to right: 1. Jan Evertse – Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland. Evertse (1600–1666) was a distinguished naval officer during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, remembered for his leadership and bravery in multiple sea battles. 2. Kornelis Evertse – Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland. Kornelis Evertse the Younger (1628–1679), nephew of Jan, also commanded Dutch fleets with distinction, particularly during the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars. 3. Louis van Boisot – Admiral of Zeeland. Boisot (c.1530–1576) played a key role in the Eighty Years’ War against Spain, notably in the relief of the city of Leiden in 1574, a turning point in the Dutch struggle for independence. These portraits were likely produced for a major historical or naval compendium, such as a biographical series on Dutch admirals. The engravings are rich in detail, showing the sitters in formal armour with fine lace collars and sashes, symbols of their rank and service. The precise line work and careful shading reflect the skill of the engravers involved. Condition report: Good condition. Light even toning with sharp, clear impressions. Minor handling marks consistent with age. Framing tips: A panoramic frame with a neutral mat will best showcase the set. A gilt or dark wooden moulding will complement their formal and historical nature. Technique: Copperplate engraving on laid paper Maker: Various Dutch engravers, after contemporary portraits; c.1774
