About the Item
Dutch Couple in Hoorn Traditional Dress, Early 19th Century Folk Costume
This finely detailed antique chromolithograph depicts a man and woman from the town of Hoorn in West Friesland, dressed in their full 'Sunday best' as worn during the early 1800s. The image is a vibrant and historically rich portrayal of traditional Dutch attire, illustrating the regional pride and ornate fashion sensibilities of the time.
The man is seated in a relaxed yet stately pose, wearing a high black silk beaver hat with a rounded crown, a double-breasted waistcoat in blue and silver damask, and baggy vivid blue knee-breeches fastened with two large silver buttons. His accessories include a white silk scarf tied with dangling ends and a short clay pipe featuring a silver cover and chain—a type commonly used at weddings.
The woman, standing beside him with a gentle hand on his shoulder, wears a resplendent bourgeois-style bodice of flowered cotton in green and red, with puffed sleeves and a distinct décolleté edged with black velvet. Her skirt, made of richly patterned damask in deep red tones, is visually anchored by a striking chatelaine from which various domestic items hang, such as a knife case, scissors, and a spool. Her lace cap is elaborately secured with gold oorijzer and filigree pins, creating a halo-like frame around her head, which suggests both status and modesty.
This image is part of a rare early 20th-century series that documented regional Dutch costume with extraordinary fidelity and charm. The original descriptions emphasize the East Indian trade wealth reflected in Hoorn’s dress traditions, from the silk waistcoats to the delicate lacework. The influence of wealth and craftsmanship is apparent throughout this plate, from the refined tailoring to the opulent accessories.
