Dutch Folk Couple in Vibrant Marriage Dress from Marken, Netherlands, c.1932
About the Item
Dutch Folk Couple in Vibrant Marriage Dress from Marken, Netherlands, c.1932
This striking hand-colored lithograph, dating from around 1932, captures a vibrantly dressed couple from Marken in their full ceremonial attire as worn during solemn events or the signing of a marriage contract. Originally published in a limited edition of 500 copies of 'The National Costumes of Holland' by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt, this rare plate offers a richly detailed and authentic depiction of Dutch regional dress, based on firsthand observation and fieldwork.
The woman wears a meticulously layered ensemble centered on an embroidered white linen chemise, paired with a red baize under-bodice trimmed in yellow braid and black velvet. Over this is a heliotrope silk corset, or rijglijf, heavily embroidered and structured with rosettes. Her sleeves and apron are elaborately pleated and cross-stitched, with red and white decorative ribbons tied in a bow at the waist. Notably, her white linen apron (the witte boezel) is accordion-pleated and trimmed in lace, while her blue damask skirt is edged in red and yellow. Around her neck are red and white embroidered apron strings, and hanging from her waist is a charming silver chain set with tools like scissors and a knife-case.
Her headgear includes a white net cap with lace tips, a silver oorijzer with detailed finials, and over this, a structured lace hood. This entire configuration reflects the specific and richly symbolic costume of Marken’s Roman Catholic community.
The groom is just as distinctively dressed. He wears a sharply cut black silk embroidered waistcoat festooned with silver buttons and stitchery, paired with knee-breeches of black cloth. His silk jacket is elaborately curved, edged in braid, and finished with more silver buttons. He dons a formal high-crowned black top hat and a red and black neckcloth secured with a gold filigree clasp from which hang akertjes, or tiny china bead charms.
Condition summary:
The print is in excellent vintage condition with strong, saturated colors and only minimal age-related toning in the margins. No visible tears, stains, or foxing. Edges are clean and sharp, with original plate number intact.
Framing tips:
For the best presentation, use an acid-free mount in a neutral tone to allow the colors of the costumes to shine. A narrow black, dark wood, or brushed silver frame adds an elegant touch while preserving historical character. UV-protective glass is recommended to maintain color fidelity.
