About the Item

Title: Acts XIII Engraving – Elymas the Sorcerer Struck Blind c.1735 Description: This dramatic antique engraving titled “Acts Chap. XIII – Elymas the Sorcerer struck with Blindness” depicts a powerful biblical event where the Apostle Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, rebukes Elymas the sorcerer for opposing the spread of the Gospel and causes him to become temporarily blind. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving vividly portrays the scene set within a classical architectural interior with columns and arches. In the foreground stands Paul with an authoritative gesture towards Elymas, who recoils in fear and blindness, guided by another figure as he loses his sight. Seated on a raised platform is Sergius Paulus, the Roman proconsul, observing the miracle with a mixture of awe and conviction, surrounded by attendants and other figures engaged in the unfolding drama. The engraved floor tiles and architectural details create depth and grandeur, emphasising the public and judicial nature of the setting. Executed with meticulous detail using the copper engraving technique, this print demonstrates the fine line work and shading typical of English Bible illustrations from the early 18th century. Such plates were often engraved after designs by leading illustrators like Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, though this particular engraving is unsigned. These prints served as theological teaching tools, visually narrating biblical miracles to educate and inspire household devotion. Collectors value this engraving for its historical, religious, and artistic significance, capturing a dramatic moment of apostolic authority and divine intervention. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. The paper remains stable with slight edge wear consistent with age. The plate impression is strong with fine engraved details clearly visible. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black frame with gold inner trim for a classic and dramatic presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the engraving’s fine lines and prevent fading. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall dedicated to biblical scenes, enhancing any collection with its narrative power and historical depth.
